Hurricanes threaten coastal communities each year. In "The Visit," a family is evacuating their home on a barrier island long before the storm arrives. Along the way, the father tells the story of a terrible hurricane, and a community that did not heed the warnings; all told from the perspective of a personified Ocean and Coastline. Using a combination of fictional narrative, drawings, and photography, this is the story of Hurricane Ian (identified simply as Storm) brought to life by the author who experienced both the hurricane and the recovery herself. She writes from a Christian perspective and shares portions of her personal story in the author notes.
In The Visit: Storm Returns, our favorite family in their small yellow car is making another trip to Nana's house. This time they are not seeking refuge from an approaching storm, but are instead bringing relief and rescue to Nana and Poppa whose community, far from the coast, has been shockingly decimated by a hurricane overnight.
I never imagined I would write two stories inspired by my personal experience with hurricanes. My first book: The Visit: A Hurricane Fable was written in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Ian in Southwest Florida in 2022. Unbelievably, two years later, Hurricane Helene's wind, rain and tornados ravaged coastal and inland communities across six states, including the my new hometown in south Georgia. The Visit: Storm Returns remembers the pain our communities endured and celebrates all those who came or sent help in our time of need.
Even though these stories are presented in a picture-book format, the subject matter is best understood by older readers or explained by adults. Hurricanes Ian and Helene impacted - and will continue to impact for years - more people than can be counted. Hurricane season will return, and with it, new storms and old memories. It is my prayer that my books will promote healing as we share our stories and remember God's faithfulness.
