I have to confess: I like chairs. I especially like old wooden chairs. In fact, I'm sitting in a very old wooden chair right now. If someone places a wooden chair on the side of the road, I always consider my option to adopt it as my very own. My house would be a chair orphanage if I could manage it. But the seat of scoffers is a another story. This is not a chair either you or I want to take. To scoff means to scorn, boast, mock or deride. The implication in this verse is that the person who sits in this chair has made themselves comfortable in a place where they think they know more than God. If you notice, this doesn't happen overnight. Walking in the counsel of the wicked, and standing in the way of sinners happens first. If only the scoffer had walked away from wicked counsel immediately before they slowed down and stood with sinners, and eventually sat down with scoffers. Psalm 1 goes on to say, "but his delight is in the law of the LORD and on his law he meditates day and night." Spending time in the Word of God each day, making it our own by living according to what it says, will help us avoid the seat of scoffers. Blessed is the man...
